Palm denies Android rumors, continues slump
An anonymous source posted an interesting Android rumor over on Slashdot last night. They claimed Palm was circulating an internal memo that stated the company would ditch its webOS in favor of Android. It sounds half crazy, but many people thought it could be true considering Palm’s recent struggle to maintain relevancy in the wireless world.
“While Palm is incredibly proud of our engineers who spent timeless work and effort to bring us this advanced operating system, consumers simply have not caught on. To provide a better future for ourselves and our customers, the only logical choice is to transition our hardware and software to the Android platform.”Leaked memo on Slashdot
Palm was quick to deny the rumor with a response to Engadget where they laughed off the news. I was kind of disappointed the rumor was false, but it does raise some interesting questions.
If Palm switched from webOS to Android right now, would it matter? Does anyone want to see Palm’s hardware merged with the Android operating system? We have yet to see a proper Android phone with a portrait qwerty keyboard and I personally like the form factor.
The Palm Pre runs the same TI OMAP 3430 processor as the Motorola Droid, so it shouldn’t be that difficult to port Android to their platform. Maybe this leaked rumor was a ploy to test the medias reaction to the idea.
