Album Review: Nice Face / ‘Immer Etwas’ (Sacred Bones)
Don’t say you didn’t hear it here first. Back in September of 2008, we caught wind of one-man band/whirling dervish Ian Magee, a.k.a. Nice Face. With a handful of home-recorded singles turned cassette-only release turned free digital download that evolved into Can I Fuck It?, the Brooklyn-based mad scientist won our hearts with songs about Jenkem and his ragged, overloaded lo-fi pop. Now, Nice Face is back. Immer Etwas is 13 tracks (19 if you get the CD) of watery echoes, lo-fi electronics and tweaked-out garage. Can you have garage without a garage? ‘Cause Immer Etwas is straight out of Magee’s bedroom, like a sweet schizophrenic mixtape you made in junior high school. rom the Iggy-styled disco slump of “A Gaping Gash” to the nearly Monks-eque bluster of “Hard Time,” the songs duck and dive through rock ‘n’ roll convention, shucking and jiving through record geek references. And Immer Etwas finds Magee occasionally reunited with guitarist Camero Werewolf. The LiveFastDie frontman and Magee used to perform together in Some Action back in the day. And while Immer Etwas‘ stylistic 90 degree turns might seem surprisingly in context with that band, its rabid energy sure doesn’t.
