Rush to Perform ‘Moving Pictures’ In Its Entirety On Upcoming Tour

While it’s no secret that veteran Canadian rockers Rush are a little long in the tooth, they haven’t lost a step. Even more miraculous is how they have outlasted a multitude of fleeting musical trends and flash-in-the-pans since forming in 1968. While their brand of epic prog-ish rock that’s chock full of thunderous drum bursts, songs (mostly) about wizardry and wanky solos might not be everyone’s cut of tea, the threesome put on a hell of a live show. (In fact, I’d go as far to say the band’s Snakes & Arrows live DVD was one of the best-produced concert flicks I saw in 2008.) Today the band announced it will embark on The Time Machine Tour, a lengthy summer jaunt kicking off on June 29th, where they will perform their much-heralded 1981 album Moving Pictures in its entirety for the first time. Not only was the multi-platinum album wildly successful, Moving Pictures boasts some of their best songs like the radio hit “Tom Sawyer” and the sizzling instrumental “YYZ,” both staples of the band’s live show.
Rush are also hard at work with producer Nick Raskulinecz on their 20th album. “We were off for a year and a half, and now it’s just pouring. Everything is totally crazy and there’s not a minute left in the day. We’ve got these half-dozen songs, and we’ll probably go in the studio and work on a couple of them and see how it goes, perhaps release something – and I say perhaps – and then we plan on being on the road,” says guitarist Alex Lifeson.
The band are also the subject of a new documentary, Rush: Beyond The Lighted Stage, created by filmmakers Scot McFadyen and Sam Dunn (Iron Maiden; Flight 666, Metal, A Headbangers Journey and Global Metal). The film will premiere at New York’s Tribeca Film Festival on April 24th followed by the Canadian premiere at Toronto’s Hot Docs festival on April 29th. In the documentary the directors analyze Rush’s 40-year career (fun fact: Rush ranks third—behind only the Beatles and the Rolling Stones—for the most gold and platinum albums) and filmed gushing testimonials by Billy Corrigan, Kirk Hammett, and Jack Black who all sing the band’s praises.
In case you missed it, Rush had a cameo in I Love You Man where they play themselves in a concert scene featuring actors Paul Rudd and Jason Segal as uber-fans. Not only does the scene remind us that the world’s a stage and we are merely players, it’s also one of the most agonizing to watch scenes in recent film history.
