Concrete Blonde on ‘Bloodletting’ 20th Anniversary Tour
If you were there at the time, you’ll remember that 1990 was not a banner year in music — the excesses of the ’80s were still ringing in our ears, hair metal ruled the roost, and we had not yet been delivered from our doldrums by Nirvana et al. So when “Joey” came on the radio, and Johnette Napolitano’s smokey voice came wafting out of the speakers, delivering that infectious, classic-sounding melody and lyrics alluding to a dark past, it was as unexpected as it was transfixing.
Now it’s been 20 years since Concrete Blonde’s Bloodletting was unleashed upon the world at large, containing not only “Joey,” but also the likes of “Caroline” and “The Sky Is a Poisonous Garden.” It was a watershed moment in early ’90s American alt-rock, and the band is honoring it by embarking on a Bloodletting 20th anniversary tour. It’s the first time in seven years that Concrete Blonde has hit the stage, so it promises to be an especially memorable event for those who hold the band’s music close to their hearts. And while you’ll surely hear plenty of Bloodletting at these shows, it seems a safe bet that other Concrete Blonde staples like “Still in Hollywood” and their killer Leonard Cohen cover “Everybody Knows” will be on the set list as well.
