Sanyo EV Travels 624 Miles on One Charge

An electric vehicle powered by lithium-ion batteries broke its own world record for the longest EV trip without recharging when it completed a 623.76 mile run.
The Daihatsu Mira EV, featuring Sanyo batteries and converted from gas to electric by the Japan EV Club, already set a record for the longest single trip without recharging when it took a 345-mile journey from Tokyo to Osaka last November.
That record was doubled over the weekend at a track in Ibaraki, Japan. To put that distance in perspective, consider that the record-breaking run took more than 22 hours. If an iPad battery lasted that long, a Mira EV passenger could use it to watch every episode of every sitcom that ever starred Andy Richter and the car would still be running.
Speaking of consumer electronics, if you’ve had a hard time ordering replacement Sanyo No. 18650 batteries for your digital camera or laptop, it might be because the Japan EV Club put 8,320 of them to work in the Mira conversion.
We found the 18650 on eBay for $6.75 each, which means the price tag on the conversion must have topped $55,000. Considering the record-breaking run had an average speed of 30 miles an hour and required a ton of work to convert an existing car, we offer our congratulations to the Japan EV Club, but — if given the choice — would probably rather deal with the hassle of recharging a Tesla every 313 miles.
