Denver Broncos Fantasy Projections
In 2009 Josh McDaniels managed to lead one of the boldest 6-0 starts in recent memory as a young coach, only to follow that up with a complete collapse losing 8 out their last 10.
But it didn’t stop there.
The Broncos also traded away oft troubled Brandon Marshall—you know, only their leading receiver and one of the best receivers in all of Fantasy—only to acquire Brady Quinn? And then go out and draft poster boy QB Tim Tebow?
McDaniels has never apologized for his crazy hi-jinx, and 2010 is shaping up to be much the same…should be oodles of fun for Bronco Country.
Quarterback:
Yes, they went out and brought in Brady Quinn, who believe it or not, does have surmountable talent. The problem is so does Kyle Orton. In 2009, Orton set career highs in competition percentage, yards and touchdowns, but remember one little note: a ton of that is because Brandon Marshall was a Bronco.
In other words, Orton’s value took a big hit this off-season as he plays in his contract year with two other guys behind him.
Moreno has a lot to smile about in 2010.
Running back:
The ground game was a pleasant off-set to all the goofy things going on in Denver last year. Knowshon Moreno wound up being the guy we all thought he was going to be rushing for 947 yards on 247 carries with seven touchdowns, and 213 yards on 28 catches for 2 more scores.
But what we didn’t all expect was Correll Buckhalter—who is almost a decade older than Moreno—coming in and doing the damage he did (120-642-1 rushing, 31-240-0 receiving).
The Broncos revamped their O-Line and added meatier guys up the middle which leads us to believe they will run more in 2010 in an attempt to control more clock, making both runners a very intriguing set.
Wide Receivers:
Brandon Marshall is gone after a banner year, Eddie Royal floundered last year, but could be ready for a breakout, Jabar Gaffney is the grandfather on the team, and Demaryius Thomas is supposed to be the second coming of Marshall.
Eddie Royal was a huge disappointment in 2009 as he didn’t even reach 400 yards, and failed to score a single passing touchdown. But in 2010, the team plans to get Royal more inclusive to the mix, in a Wes Welker type of role…too bad the damage has already been done.
Demaryius Thomas and his 6’3” 229 pound frame has some big shoes to fill, and the Broncos feel he is more than talented to do so. He has great vertical pass catching abilities, uber speed, and is a strong physical receiver who is able to break a lot of tackles. He should have an immediate fantasy impact in 2010.
Jabar Gaffney is getting up there in age and has definitely lost a step, so he doesn’t figure to be anything more than a decoy on the field, while rookie Eric Decker will wind up playing the role of the middle child.
Tight End:
There is little to speak of when it comes to the Broncos TEs simply because they are a team that rarely uses them. Tony Scheffler—now a Lion—only had 416 yards and two scores on 31 catches all year…nothing to see here people, move along.
Defense:
For those of you in IDP leagues there is only one name we all know in love in Denver: Elvis Dumervil who led the league in sacks (17) in 2009. Aside from him, there was a lot of moving around at the linebacker position primarily due to situational reasons. Keep an eye on Mario Haggan who will move to the inside which means more opportunities for tackles; something he excels at.
The secondary is old, but it is hard to ignore Champ Bailey and Brian Dawkins, and the D-line isn’t all that special outside of maybe NT Jamal Williams and DE Jarvis Green.

Coaching Strategy:
Offense:
The offense uses a simple multi-receiver type attack mainly because McDaniels and company believe in finding the open receiver rather than cramming the ball down someone’s throat. This will continue in 2010 which boads well for just about everyone and remember, as mentioned above, the running game should be more active this year as well.
Defense:
One half of the defense is rather old, one half is rather young. They do have sure tacklers, but they will have to step things up in 2010 and become a more consistent team if they are to be taken seriously.
