Mark Pawlik was walking down the street when the earth swallowed an SUV and its driver.
It happened about 8 p.m. Thursday in rain-sodden Milwaukee at the corner of North Oakland and East North avenues. Pawlik told the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel he was chatting on his phone when he saw a a streetlight in a small sinkhole.
Lemme call you back, he told his friend. I gotta take a picture of this.
Moments later, a Cadillac Escalade pulled up to the intersection. And then, suddenly…
“The Escalade just went wham!” Pawlik said in a first-person account published by the Sentinel. “Everything went down. The power line went like ‘pow’ and then I think it was sewer water was just pouring into the hole.”
Pawlik ran up to the hole, which he said was 15 or 20 feet deep, and found the driver asking, “What just happened?”
