Album Review: Starfucker – ‘B-sides’ (Badman Recording Co.)
Having reverted back to their original name, Portland’s indie/dance outfit Starfucker are back with a short collection of their signature electronic-influenced post-disco for the skinny jean set. Opening with a chill blast through Madonna’s 1983 “Burning Up,” B-sides provides what the quartet always promised to begin with: thoughtful pop music that’s danceable. Starfucker take the post-MGMT/ELO route, washing out guitars into the background and leaving enough room for their celestial synths to shimmy. Singer Joshua Hodges vocals are relegated to the back of the mix, which focuses more acutely on Starfucker’s rhythmic backbone, which fortunately strays occasionally from the simple four-on-the-floor. Tracks “Ahhz” and “Boy Toy” are highlights, both in terms of energy and the particular sort of atmosphere that is Starfucker’s forte.
