David Byrne’s ‘Bicycle Diaries’: A Different Kind of Audiobook

It would probably be news enough to simply report that David Byrne’s book Bicycle Diaries is about to be released in both paperback and e-book editions, but it’s the audiobook version — all three are set for a September 28 publication date — that really promises to take Byrne’s lifelong practice of artistic innovation to a new level. The book itself is an account of Byrne’s experiences as an avid cyclist who takes the opportunity to bike no matter where his travels might bring him. Each chapter offers anecdotes from a different annal in Byrne’s bicycling experiences all over the globe.
When he began preparing to release Bicycle Diaries as an audiobook, Byrne — always one to think outside the box — started wondering whether he could bring something new to the process. Eventually he decided that instead of simply reading the text as an unaccompanied voice, he’d create special pieces of music to accompany each chapter, even adding various ambient sounds to further flesh out the atmosphere of whatever story was being relayed. Part of Byrne’s plan is to make each chapter of Bicycle Diaries available as an individual download, giving listeners not only the ability to snatch random stories from the book at will, but also to shuffle and reassemble them in any order, just as you can do with an album on an iPod. The introductory chapter will be made available for free, but once you’re hooked, you’ll have to pony up to satisfy your Bicycle Diaries jones.
