EU creates a 200,000 system grid for researchers
Filed under: NewsThe European Union has unveiled the European Grid Infrastructure project, which will allow researchers to tap into the collective power of more than 200,000 desktop computers across 30 EU nations. That's a whole lotta computing power.
As is the case with similar distributed computing projects like SETI@home, the thought behind EGI is that those 200,000 computer systems are sitting idle more than half of the time and their hardware is just begging to be put to good use. The EU's Neelie Kroes hopes EGI will “strengthen Europe's hand in research and give..scientists the support they need, whilst saving energy and cutting costs.”
The EU will contribute 25 million Euros over the next four years. A good number of resource providers are also onboard, from CERN to just about every grid initiative in Europe.
