MGMT at Brixton Academy, London 9/30/10
It’s been a fast and furious journey for MGMT since they burst onto the scene in 2007 with their psychedelic synth-pop. Signing with Columbia Records and later being named Spin, Rolling Stone, BBC and Last.fm’s Artist of the Year (amongst other fancy honors) was only the beginning of MGMT’s rise to crossover stardom. Since then they have supported M.I.A, Radiohead and Sir Paul McCartney, and their music has been featured on Gossip Girl and The Vampire Diaries.
Tonight was their moment yet again as they headlined the first of two nights at London’s Brixton Academy. As founding members Ben Goldwasser and Andrew Van Wyngarden walked onstage through a waterfall of red light along with the rest of the band — James Richardson, Matt Asti and Wil Berman — the crowd’s cheers nearly ripped the paint off the walls. They opened with the thunderous drums of new single “It’s Working” from their third album, Congratulations, and seamlessly melted into the dreaminess of “The Youth.” The night clearly got going when they dove into the anthem “Electric Feel” early on and gave their fans the opportunity to go crazy, with people spilling into the aisles and grinding their worries away.
The show featured a balance of Oracular Spectacular with “Of Moons, Birds & Monsters,” the eccentric sounds of “4th Dimensional Transition” and, of course, “Kids.” But it was songs from the recent Congratulations that showed their growth and further experimentation — tracks like “Song For Dan Treacy” and closing song “Congratulations” could have easily elevated the crowd high above the Brixton Academy roof. With a performance that enchanted the crowd to the last note, MGMT had accomplished what they had clearly came to achieve.
