In addition to the many other hats he wears as a champion of the esoteric arts, longtime WFMU DJ Irwin Chusid has helped to define the Outsider Music aesthetic, through both his eccentric radio show and his book Songs In The Key of Z, which is pretty much the definitive text of the genre. Now, as part of a fundraising effort on behalf of the non-commercial FMU, Chusid is letting go of a major piece of his Outsider Music legacy via eBay.
Readers of Chusid’s book, listeners to his show, and adventurous ears in general will be familiar with Jandek, the mysterious, inaccessible, rather indefinable Texas musician whose mysterious persona and challenging anti-music have made him — with Chusid’s bemused assistance — a notorious cult phenomenon, whose story has been told in the documentary Jandek On Corwood, as well as in Songs In the Key of Z. For decades, the rarely-seen Jandek has self-released his recordings through his own Corwood Industries label in limited editions. To help keep the lights on at FMU, Chusid is auctioning off his entire collection of 52 Jandek CDs — many still sealed — along with the original hand-adressed mailers in which Jandek sent them to the DJ. For good measure, he’s throwing in a signed copy of his book, where you can read more about the complicated relationship between Jandek and Chusid. There are still a few days to go, but the bid is surprisingly low at the moment, so leap into the fray — it’s for an excellent cause!
