Facebook is holding a special mobile event at their HQ tomorrow and while none of us know exactly what will be announced, some have speculated it might be the elusive Facebook Android phone. Facebook was quick to discredit the rumors that they were working on a phone, but this wouldn’t be the first time we saw a denial followed by a major product launch.
If Facebook is working on an Android phone, they already got the right man for the job. This July Facebook hired Erick Tseng as their Head of Mobile Products division. Prior to Facebook, Mr. Tseng worked for Google as Senior Product Manager of Android and was one of the key people behind the Nexus One launch.
After talking with Erick at CES back in January it seemed like he was pretty happy at Google, but then all the carriers backed out of their commitments to launch the Nexus One and Google closed their online phone store. I won’t pretend to know what Erick is working on, but a Facebook phone sounds right up his alley.
What do you think Facebook will announce tomorrow? Will they finally update their aging Android client to support new features like places? Will they unveil new Groupon-like promotions for checking into locations? Or will it be the Facebook phone?
