Album Review: Tom Tom Club – ‘Genius of Live’ (Nacional Records)
Three decades ago, Tina Weymouth and Chris Frantz took a break from their role as rhythm section for the Talking Heads, headed to Jamaica, and returned with a landmark album (Tom Tom Club, Sire Records) that proved white people could be real funky. All these years later, the band’s unique mix of reggae, Afrobeat and funk is still inspiring artists to cover, remix, and sample those tracks. As the title suggests, this recent release includes live tracks, but the real winners here are the remixes by Ozomatli, Nortec Collective, Money Mark, The Pinker Tones and others; theses artists pay tribute to the band by remixing Tom Tom Club’s classic “Genius of Love”.
