The A/V Connection: Music for Film and other Visuals
El jefe of kooky, cult-pop film scoring, Mark Mothersbaugh (member of Devo, longtime musical rainmaker for director Wes Anderson, etc. etc.) is working on a Mex comedy, Private Perez, involving a crime lord on a family rescue mission in Iraq. If 1) Mexican organized crime and 2) Iraq don’t necessarily scream “funny” these days, Mothersbaugh’s style should be a super match for this picture – his scores usually manage to be poignant and tickle without being full-out cartoonish.
Milk and Cheerios, EVOO and balsamic, the Stones and Martin Scorsese…perfect together! This time the Stones’ recording of “She Said Yeah” (from early album December’s Children [and Everybody’s]) drives the high-low, swinging garage-y feel of Scorsese’s new Bleu de Chanel cologne ad (pictured). Whether or not you need any cologne in your life, it’s a really fun, sexy, artistic little piece. The pairing of the Stones’ incomparable “Gimme Shelter” with the ads for Call of Duty: Black Ops, on the other hand, gets the job done but…it’s just not worthy!
And: Michael Giacchino (composer for Lost and many films) has teamed up with J.J. Abrams once more, for next summer’s sci-fi spooker Super 8.
