Review Round-Up: ‘Rascals’ Underwhelmes Critics

Directed by David Dhawan, “Rascals” is a comedy starring Sanjay Dutt and Ajay Devgan. They interpret two rascals: Chetan Chouhan and Bhagat Bhosale, respectively. The film revolves around the pair trying to outsmart each other and others along the way. Despite being hotly-anticipated, the movie has failed to impress critics. Here’s a roundup of what they had to say about the film:

Venus Worldwide Entertainment Pvt. Ltd.

Writing in The Times of India, film critic Gaurav Malani slammed the movie as “inconsistent, convenient and uneventful.” Criticizing the actors’ performances for their lack of conviction, he found that the movie expected the audience “to leave their senses behind.” Labeling the film’s dialogue and script to be the product of “patchy writing,” he also added that its humor was “consistently loud and commotional.”
“One can easily see through most of the worn-out gags. Sanjay Chhel’s synchronized rhyming dialogues are occasionally funny but seem forced otherwise. You laugh more on the corniness of the scenes than the comedy per se,” he wrote.
Hindustan Times’s Bollywood critic Mayank Shekhar had a similar take on the movie, noting that it left the audience “brain-dead.”  He went as far as saying that Rascals “defies a film,” noting that it was not only the audience that seemed to lose interest in the film, but the filmmakers as well: “At some point, out of the blue, they just abandon the whole project, start replaying scenes from the picture, everybody begins dancing together – friends and foes.”
Weekly magazine India Today claimed that laughter, if ever intended in the film, was “strictly incidental.” Noting that the movie was “stale” and “tasteless,” the magazine also accused Mr. Dhawan, the director,  of having “made this unfunny comedy to please his friends who play the major roles in the film.”
“David Dhawan has clearly run out of tricks to make the Tom and Jerry act any further.  The film is carpeted with dreadfully unfunny jokes that insult every community,” the review said.
However, the piece complemented actor Arjun Rampal, who plays a minor role in the movie, for his cool and controlled outlook, sympathizing with him for being part of an “uncool rudderless comedy.”
Writing in  Daily News and Analysis, it was clear critic Manisha Lakhe wasn’t very pleased with the movie: “smashing your toes by a hammer would be more entertaining,” she said.  She complained the movie was “overly long,” and suggested several scenes had been copied from other Bollywood films.
“Invest in that hammer instead of buying a movie ticket. And please sign an online petition that will prevent David Dhawan from remaking Chupke Chupke,” she told readers.
Komal Nahta, editor of Bollywood blog Koimoi, said that the film lacked a cohesive plot, coming across as an assemblage of comic scenes that had been “randomly thrown together.” He also said that the film’s “poor screenplay” and “absence of a solid plot” failed to engage the audience.
“Many of the comic scenes fail to even get a smile on the viewer’s face, leave alone elicit laughter” he wrote, adding that “the overtly loud scenes get on the audience’s nerves.”
Please tell us what you thought of the film in the Comments section.
